On September 14, we celebrate the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. Historically, we commemorate Saint Helena, mother of the Emperor Constantine, and her miraculous finding of the True Cross in Jerusalem. I must ask you: what does it mean to "exalt" a Roman instrument of execution in the twenty-first century? It is a call to a permanent, internal revolution. We are directed to reinforce the cross permanently in our own hearts as a fortress against the "ingratitude of men." This ingratitude is a spiritual amnesia that treats Christ’s sacrifice as a distant myth rather than a present reality. To exalt the Cross is to refuse to let the fire of His love go cold within us. It is a necessary act of remembrance in an era that has largely forgotten Him. This journey of internal exaltation begins at the foot of that very Cross, standing alongside the one who first lived this mystery: the Blessed Mother. The strategic transition from the Exaltation of the Cross (September 14) to the Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows (September 15) is an inseparable union in the economy of salvation. We cannot truly behold the Wood of the Cross without beholding the Mother who stood beneath it. In Luke 2:35, the prophecy of Simeon tells us that a sword would pierce Mary’s soul so that "out of many hearts, thoughts may be revealed." This is the "So What?" of the Mater Dolorosa: the piercing of her soul serves a functional, purgative purpose. Her suffering occurred where the "highest faculties of the soul reside," making her a spiritual catalyst for our own purification. When her heart was opened, it created a vessel through which humanity could finally feel the weight of Christ’s sorrows. This is the "highest form of love"—a love so visceral it sweeps away the hate and evil of the world. By entering into her sorrow, our own thoughts are revealed and corrected, leading us to fulfill the greatest commandment: to love God, completely and in every way. © 2026 E2DAY (EZ4EVER).
