Embers of Us

This story was born during one of the harder periods of my life, from a question that became impossible to ignore: what happens when someone is pushed far enough that they have to choose what kind of person they will become? When all you see is cruelty, it can become tempting to abandon compassion altogether. The choice becomes a battle between continuing to care and becoming something that no longer does. Rather than simply describe that struggle, I wanted to turn it into an entire world. The story begins with a journey inward. A person steps into themselves expecting to find peace, only to discover a vast battlefield already consumed by war. Two opposing forces are fighting for control of the soul. And commanding both armies is the same general. As the battle unfolds, the landscape changes according to the choices made outside of it. Towers rise from conviction. Castles become strongholds. Walls are constructed to protect one side or the other. Other structures collapse when different choices are made. Every decision leaves something standing and brings something else down. The battlefield becomes a living map of character. At first, the person within the battlefield seems powerless to stop the conflict. But eventually comes the realization that changes everything: the battlefield belongs to them. The armies are not controlled by fate. Their strength is determined by what is chosen, protected, abandoned, and destroyed. The enemy is the self. So is the ally. And ultimately, so is the victor. That is the central idea behind the story: becoming a better person is not the absence of conflict. It is the continual act of deciding which parts of yourself deserve reinforcement. The original vision was for the completed story to hang beside the bed as a daily reminder. Each morning, it would ask which side would be strengthened that day. Each night, it would demand an accounting of the casualties. What was protected? What was sacrificed? What was built? What was allowed to fall? The battle may never completely disappear. That isn't the objective. The objective is to remember who commands it. Because the battlefield is within us, and every day, we choose what survives.
