Erik Satie composed Gnossienne No. 3 in 1890, as part of a small collection of works that resist traditional musical structures. Unlike the sonata or waltz, the Gnossiennes lack bar lines, fixed time signatures, and conventional development. Instead, they float in a free rhythm, creating a sense of timelessness and inner reflection. Gnossienne No. 3 is shorter and more intimate than the first two, yet it carries the same hallmark qualities: modal harmonies, exotic touches, and enigmatic instructions to the performer. Satie’s score contains curious performance notes—such as “counsel yourself carefully” or “with great kindness”—which hint at moods rather than technical guidance. Performed by Anna Konoplyova
